Archery term

Serving

Definition

Serving is the protective wrapping of thread bound tightly around sections of a bowstring or cable, most importantly the center where the arrow nocks and where the fingers or release contact the string. It is wound over the load-bearing string fibers underneath.

Why it matters

The serving shields the string from the wear of nocking, release, and rest contact, extending string life and keeping the nock fit consistent. Its diameter sets how snugly the nock grips the string, and serving that separates or wears can change nock fit and tuning, so it is inspected and re-served as part of string maintenance.
