Archery term

Stabilizer

Definition

A stabilizer is a weighted rod, or system of rods, that mounts to the front and sometimes the sides and rear of the riser to add mass and dampen movement. It typically combines a length of rod with adjustable weights at the end.

Why it matters

By adding mass away from the bow's center, a stabilizer resists unwanted motion and helps the bow settle and stay steady while aiming, and it absorbs some vibration on release. Adjusting rod length and end weight lets an archer tune balance and how the bow reacts in the shot, which is why stabilizer setup is a standard part of dialing in a target rig.
